How to Prepare for Ramadan

How to Prepare for Ramadan? While Ramadan is on the door, Muslims from every place on the earth are preparing themselves for this holy month. It’s a unique opportunity to trade with Allah (SWT), and obtain His forgiveness and blessing.

“Ramadan”, “Ramazan”, “Ramzan”, “Ramadhan” or “Ramathan” (in Arabic: رَمَضَان) is the holy month of fasting, learning the Quran, Dua, and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is commemorated as the month during which Muhammad received the preliminary revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Each day throughout Ramadan, Muslims should not eat or drink from dawn to sunset. They are also supposed to abstain from impure thoughts and bad behavior. Thus, false words or bad deeds or intentions are as destructive of a fast as eating or drinking.

What is Ramadan?

Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is commemorated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s significant holidays.

Ramadan always falls on the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar. Ramadhan starts at sunset on Monday, April 13, and ends on Wednesday, May 12.

Lots of Muslims may understand the value and virtues of Ramadan. Yet, they may not win the benefits of this holy month because they have not gotten ready for it appropriately.

Intending to help Muslim siblings & sis make the best use of this sacred month, we have set the following list of top tips and acts in Ramadan :

1. Sawm (Fasting During Ramadan)

“Sawm” or “Fasting During Ramadhan” is obligatory upon every sane, healthy Muslim who reaches puberty. In this regard, Allah (SWT) states:

O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you1—so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.

The Holy Quran [2:183]

The act of fasting is meant to remind Muslims of the less fortunate and to reinforce the need to be thankful. Not to mention, fasting can help prevent health problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease, and obesity, as well as improve mental health and well-being. The benefits of fasting during the holy month are countless. Yet, there are 2 essential rules for your fast to be valid and accepted:

  1. Sincere Intention
You must have the intention to fast before fajr (dawn) every night during the month of Ramadan. The intention does not need to be spoken, because, in reality, it is an act of the heart, which does not involve the tongue. It will be fulfilled by one’s intention from the heart to fast out of obedience to Allah Almighty seeking His pleasure & forgiveness.
  2. Abstaining From Any Act That Nullifies The Fast
For your fast to be accepted, you should abstain from the acts that nullify the fast from dawn to sunset.

2. Commitment to Prayers & Nawafil

“Salah”, “Salat” or “Muslim Prayer”, also called “Namaz”, is the second pillar of Islam and has a distinguished place in the Islam religion. In this regard, our beloved prophet Muhammad said:

Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost. So if something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then the Lord, Mighty, and Sublime says: ‘Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshipper?’ So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated like that.

Hadith [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413]

The Hadith above emphasizes the greatness of prayer and its importance. Performing prayers protects us from evil, enriches the soul, makes us humble, washes away sins, and solutions to all our problems.

Accordingly, as part of the preparation for Ramadhan, we should pay great attention to performing prayer with Khushoo (proper focus and humility).

We are not talking only about obligatory prayers here! But performing Nawafil prayers on a regular basis as well. This can bring you unmatched rewards as the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.

Hadith [Book 31, Hadith 1]

3. Learn Quran during Ramadan

The most popular title given to Ramadan is “The month of Quran”; The Quran was revealed in this holy month. In this regard, Allah (SWT) states:

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an . . .

The Holy Quran [2:185]

The Holy Quran is the words of Allah (SWT), a message of mercy and guidance to the whole of mankind. Every letter you read and understand from the Quran, gets you a step closer to Allah Almighty.

Moreover, in Ramadan, Allah (SWT) multiplies our good deeds more than in any other month.

Normally, a Muslim gets 10 good deeds on reading each letter from the Holy Quran. This number is multiplied during the sacred month. So, imagine reading a complete Ayah, Surah, or reading the whole Quran in Ramadhan! In this regard, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

Whoever recites a letter] from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.

Hadith [Book 45, Hadith 3158]

Zakat seeks to increase faith and devotion to Allah (SWT). It also serves as a net of social security for the poor and uplift and supports the entire community.

Zakat can be paid at any point in the year – before, after, or during Ramadan. However, many Muslims choose to make their Zakat payment during the Holy month as they believe the rewards that come as a result of this are multiplied.

We should also not mix between Zakat payment and Zakat al-Fitr (also known as Fitrana), which is a donation that must be made during Ramadan by every adult Muslim who has food in excess of their needs.

Conclusion

Zakat redeems numerous times its worth in cleansing reward. Allah (SWT) multiplies this currently rich recompense and exemplary act tremendously in Ramadan. So, It’s considered of the most important elements that Muslims should pay attention to in order to prepare for Ramadhan.
